"The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building
In terms of fitness and working out, I think this applies in a couple of ways. We may be fighting old habits, or, we may find ourselves fighting against our expectations and perceptions of how we ‘should be’ or ‘used to be’. Maybe you were in great shape before kids, or were an athlete in college, and now you feel like you can’t get back to that “ideal”, so why bother?
It can be discouraging to find yourself in a situation where you’re not in the shape you want to be, or not in the shape you used to be - due to a variety of reasons: getting older, working long hours, family responsibilities, injury, etc. But the past is the past. Does it really matter how you got to this point? You are where you are, and the choice in front of you is how to proceed. Dwelling on the past, and “fighting the old”, is a waste of your energy.
It’s important to meet yourself where you are right now and focus on where you’re going. Put your energy into building new habits, a new body, and a new lifestyle.
